Rinca Island is the home of fascinating wildlife, the Komodo Dragon. Recognized as UNESCO World Heritage, this island offers enormous jewels beside Komodo, such as a white sand beach and natural panorama.
Land of Komodo Dragons and Other Exotic Wildlife
Rinca Island is one of the three biggest islands in the National Komodo Park Area. This sanctuary was built in 1980 to protect the endangered Komodo Dragon that lives on the island. It is also a natural habitat of buffaloes, macaques, snakes, birds, deers, wild pigs, and saltwater crocodiles. This island is a dry area with savannah topography.
Why Should You Visit Rinca Island?
Easier to Observe Komodo Dragon
Rinca island, with its more diverse terrain, is a lesser-known and therefore less-visited island compared to Komodo Island. This island offers better conditions for observing the Komodo Dragon in their natural habitat.
Mostly undisturbed by tourists and other human inhabitants. Thus we recommend you to have this island on your bucket list when you visit National Komodo Park.
Marine Life Surrounding Rinca Island Offers Different Type of Adventure
While the savannahs of Rinca Island offer much excitement, the marine life and coral reefs surrounding the island serve up a different kind of adventure. There are small beautiful white sand beaches around the island, perfect for soaking up the sun after a hike.
However, you may always want to have an experienced local ranger around you while on the beaches of Rinca Island as Komodo dragons often like to sunbathe and can impose a danger to tourists if they are disturbed. Be aware of their presence as they hunt their prey with double the speed a human can run and swim twice as fast too.
Trekking on Rinca Island to Observe Komodo
Treks on this island start from the ticket office at Loh Buaya. You also have the option to choose between three trails. The shortest trek takes 30 minutes. It is an easy, shaded walk that passes an artificial waterhole before ascending to a small hill with a view over the bay, and can be done by people of all fitness levels.
On the one-hour trek, you will cross an exposed savannah studded with lontar palms and pass through the Komodo dragon’s nests. For the best opportunity to see dragons and their prey, choose the two-hour trek past a permanent waterhole and across steep, exposed slopes that offer breathtaking views.
