Labuan Bajo and Komodo Island: Is It the Same?
Many first-time visitors might confuse Labuan Bajo and Komodo Island, thinking they’re one place. In fact, they are two distinct areas. Labuan Bajo is a small but bustling harbor town located on the western tip of Flores Island in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Komodo Island is part of Komodo National Park, which lies further west from Labuan Bajo, accessible only by boat.
Although they are different, Labuan Bajo serves as the primary gateway to explore Komodo Island and other nearby islands within the park (including Rinca Island, Pulau Padar, and Pink Beach).
Where is Komodo Island
Komodo Island is a part of Komodo National Park located in the Nusa Tenggara Archipelago, east of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia. This island is renowned for a population of around 2,500 giant lizards, which only exist there.

Labuan Bajo as a Gateway to Explore Komodo Island

Labuan Bajo is located on the westernmost tip of Flores Island. This charming town serves as the main gateway for exploring the many destinations within Komodo National Park, including the famous Komodo Island.
As the main entry point for travelers, Labuan Bajo offers essential facilities before you embark on a Komodo Island Tour from Labuan Bajo, since Komodo Island can only be accessed by boat from Labuan Bajo due to its remote location:
- Komodo Airport: Most flights land here from major Indonesian cities.
- Hotels & Accommodations: Options range from budget hostels to luxury resorts.
- Restaurants & Cafés: Enjoy local and international cuisine while overlooking the harbor.
- Tour Operators: You’ll find various companies offering packages to travel from Labuan Bajo to Komodo Island—from budget to private luxury trips.
The Harbor in Labuan Bajo
Located just a 10-minute drive from the airport, the harbor is the launchpad for all boat trips to Komodo National Park. This is also where you can choose between a speed boat Labuan Bajo Komodo or a slower, more traditional wooden vessel (Phinisi) for multi-day liveaboard experiences
