What Makes Komodo Island So Special?
Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands, from Sabang to Merauke. Each area offers its own charm. Start from the very west, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam with its Blue Lagoon, until the most eastern area, Raja Ampat in West Papua. Komodo Island, on the other hand, located in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is the land of the last dragon on earth, the Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis).
Komodo Island is a part of Komodo National Park, which was established in 1980 by the Indonesian central government to protect the endangered Komodo Dragons. In 1991, National Komodo Park was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the New Seven Wonders of Nature in 2011. These giant lizards exist nowhere else on earth and have attracted the interest of scientists studying evolution. Later this place was also dedicated to protecting other species, including marine species. As its popularity increased around the world, Komodo National Park then became the new gateway to Indonesia after Jakarta and Bali.

Its rugged hillsides of dry savannah and pockets of thorny green vegetation contrast greatly with the clear blue water and white sand. The best time to visit Komodo Island to get such a view is between April to October during the dry season. The weather is so good, not too hot with very little to no rain. The rainy season sometimes starts early in October, so if you don’t like getting wet, plan your trip before then. You can spot the Komodo dragon all year round. However, the mating season is from July to August and the nesting season runs from September to November, which can be challenging to spot the Komodo during the nesting period.
You can observe the wildlife of Komodo’s in its habitat. It costs you approximately IDR 700,000/person for foreigners and IDR 400,000/person for Indonesians to enter Komodo National Park, including Komodo Island.
